France is about to take a new step in road traffic regulation with the official commissioning of urban speed cameras from 16 January 2024. This announcement concerns several cities in the country, including Belfort, Doubs, Marseille and Toulouse.

Cautious Communication from Authorities

Despite this confirmation, some prefectures, like Haute-Garonne, are adopting a cautious approach while waiting for reliable information before officially communicating on the subject.

Regional Deployment Programme

Unlike a national announcement from the Ministry of the Interior, each concerned prefect communicates on deployment according to a programme specific to their region. Belfort already announces the first fines from 16 January, while Doubs will soon unveil its programme for its many planned installations. In Marseille, the device is declared operational by the Police Prefecture.

Waiting in Toulouse and Elsewhere

Toulouse, which has 20 urban speed cameras, awaits the official announcement from its prefecture, but should follow the national trend. In these urban areas, urban speed cameras not only monitor speed and red lights, but also play a decoy role, as not all are active at all times.

Impact on Drivers' Wallets

The reduction of the speed limit to 30 kilometres per hour in certain urban areas, combined with the discretion of these installations, suggests a potential financial impact on motorists. However, it should be noted that minor speeding offences will no longer be penalised by points being removed from the driving licence.
